THE GARAGE DOOR GLOSSARY / Fitting

Drive-through width

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Drive-through width is the usable horizontal space through the fitted garage entrance when the door is open.

In practice

It is one part of the overall clear opening. Side guides, frames and the mounting arrangement can reduce access compared with a measurement taken between the brickwork before installation.

Consider the vehicle’s mirrors, the angle of approach and the room needed to walk past it. With two existing openings, assess each separately rather than assuming that the bays are identical. A wider door proposal may also depend on structural work that must be assessed before the opening is changed.
