A garage with room for two cars does not automatically need one large door. Two separate openings can work well, while a single wider entrance can make manoeuvring easier. The choice depends on the existing building, how the household uses the garage and whether structural alterations are being considered.

Start with the existing structure

If the garage already has two openings, the central pier may support the structure above. Combining them is not simply a matter of ordering a wider curtain. The lintel, supporting masonry and the surrounding building need appropriate assessment before any alteration is planned.

If you are keeping the existing openings, measure each one separately. They may look identical but differ in width, height, floor level or available sideroom. The measuring guide explains which notes and photographs help an initial enquiry.

Think about parking and walking access

A single wider entrance can provide more flexibility when positioning a vehicle. With two openings, the central pier separates the parking bays and affects the route into each one. Try the approach with the vehicles you use, including mirrors and the angle of the driveway.

The drive-through width is more useful than a rough description such as single or double. Ask for the clear opening after guides and any frame are fitted. Include the space needed to walk alongside the car, move a bicycle or bring garden equipment through.

Consider how often each part needs to open

Two single roller garage doors can operate independently, which may suit a garage where one bay is used much more often. One double roller garage door serves the wider opening as a single installation. Each arrangement has different equipment and access considerations.

Discuss emergency access for every opening and whether there is a separate pedestrian entrance. Independent doors are not a reason to assume a particular backup arrangement is unnecessary. The suitable controls and manual override depend on the chosen systems and layout.

Compare appearance and complete quotations

A wide curtain creates a strong horizontal feature, while two doors retain the rhythm of separate bays. Colours and the treatment of the guides, box covers and surrounding masonry all affect the finished view. Look at the finish palette alongside the front elevation.

Ask for quotations that describe the same scope: the door systems, installation, any old-door removal, access arrangements and building preparation. Do not compare a supply-only price with a complete fitting proposal. Tell the team what you want to improve, and agree the structural and door specifications before committing to alterations.
