THE GARAGE DOOR GLOSSARY / Performance

Foam insulation

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Foam insulation is a core material used within some double-skinned garage door slats or panels to help reduce heat transfer through those elements.

In practice

The result depends on the material, thickness and complete construction. A foam-filled curtain does not make an entire garage insulated, and its benefit is affected by joints, sealing, installation and the surrounding building.

If temperature is an important consideration, explain how the space is used and whether it connects directly to the house. Ask for performance information relevant to the complete product where available. Avoid comparing an isolated material figure with a whole-door figure as if they were the same measurement.
