THE GARAGE DOOR GLOSSARY / Controls

Manual override

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

A manual override is a manufacturer-provided way to operate or release a powered garage door when normal powered operation is unavailable.

In practice

The mechanism and procedure vary. Some systems use a winding handle, while others have a different release or operating arrangement. An override should be demonstrated for the exact door supplied; instructions for another motor may not apply.

Access matters as much as the mechanism itself. If the garage has no other entrance, an internal handle alone may be unreachable when the door is closed. Discuss external access before ordering. Never force a jammed or damaged door simply because an override is fitted.
