THE GARAGE DOOR GLOSSARY / Controls

External manual override

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

An external manual override provides an approved way to access the emergency operating mechanism of a compatible garage door from outside.

In practice

It is particularly relevant when the garage has no separate entrance. The method may involve lockable access to a manual operating arrangement, but the exact design must be confirmed for the chosen product.

It is not the same thing as a remote control, nor does it make every fault suitable for owner intervention. The installer should demonstrate the approved method while the system is in a safe condition. Keep any supplied keys and instructions accessible and seek assistance if the door is damaged or may move unexpectedly.
