THE GARAGE DOOR GLOSSARY / Safety

Safety edge

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

A safety edge is a protective sensing component positioned on an edge of a moving door, commonly along the bottom of a roller curtain.

In practice

When activated, it signals the compatible control system to respond. The design, correct installation and controller behaviour all matter. Its presence alone does not establish that the complete powered door is safe for every situation.

Keep the travel area clear and follow the approved owner checks. Do not use your hands, feet or other body parts to test closing forces. Damaged edges, repeated reversals or an unexpected response need competent assessment. Never bypass a protective device to keep the door moving.
