THE GARAGE DOOR GLOSSARY / Door types

Canopy garage door

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

A canopy garage door is an up-and-over design in which part of the open single-panel door projects outside the garage, forming a canopy.

In practice

The panel moves as one main section, unlike the connected slats of a roller curtain. Its movement and open position need to be considered alongside the driveway, parked cars and access to the garage.

Canopy and retractable gearing are different arrangements, so do not assume all up-and-over doors require the same space or automation equipment. When comparing an existing canopy door with a roller replacement, assess the complete installed opening and the building rather than simply copying the old panel size.
